Four Corners Ensemble is excited to announce our second season of Operation Opera, a unique initiative that invites both composers and vocalists to Spokane, and centers around the performance and workshopping of contemporary operas and art songs.
Performances will include premieres of art songs and concert settings of selected operas in Gonzaga University's state-of-the-art Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center, where vocal participants will perform alongside members of the Four Corners Ensemble.

Operation Opera 2018 in Ann Arbor, MI
Composition Program
Operation Opera is an innovative 7-day festival/institute presenting high-caliber performances of contemporary chamber operas and art songs. Three operas composed for chamber ensembles, and up to ten composers who will create art songs/song cycles with paired singers will be selected through an international call. Together with singers and 4CE musicians, invited composers will participate in a variety of career-enhancing activities at Gonzaga University (Spokane, WA), including composition seminars, lessons and lectures by festival faculty, interactive rehearsals with singers and 4CE musicians, and a final concert-setting performance between June 6th-13th.
Professional recordings of the performances will be made available for composer participants.
Guidelines
Category A- Opera
Submissions are due by February 1, 2022. Results will be announced by March 1, 2022.
Please include a PDF score of the opera, audio file (optional), resume and headshot.
We accept completed chamber operas (a 15-20 minute excerpt or an entire opera if under 20 minutes).

Flute (doubling Piccolo)
Clarinet (doubling E-flat Clarinet and Bass Clarinet)

*Percussion may be available and will be determined on a case-by-case basis
Category B- Art Songs/Song Cycle
Composers are invited to compose a song or short cycle of songs for singer and piano. Once selected, composers will work with the paired singer / pianist before the festival and over the course of the festival on developing the work for performance.
We accept proposals for art songs and song cycles up to 7-8 min in length, 2 representative scores (including graphic, aleatoric, and/or written performance instructions) and audio recordings, which are to be no longer than 20 minutes in combined duration. One of the scores needs to be for voice.

Travel and Accommodation
Attendance to the Operation Opera Festival in Spokane, WA, is required.
On-campus housing is available from June 6-13 (7 nights, check-in 6th, leave 13th) for the rate of $250
Participants are expected to cover their own travel, room and board. Limited scholarship may be available based on need.
Tuition & Fees

Tuition - $500 for programs A OR B ($250 Deposit due Mar. 15 if selected, remainder due May 1)
$750 for programs A AND B ($250 Deposit due Mar. 15 if selected, remainder due May 1)
On-campus housing- $250 (Due upon arrival)

Vocal Program
Eligibility
All voice types should apply
Applicants in their 5th-8th semester of vocal study at the undergraduate level or in a graduate/doctoral program should apply.
Category A: Opera Performance Intensive
Once selected, opera singers will prepare roles before the start of the festival. During the week of the festival, performers will participate in interactive rehearsals with composers and conductors. The operas will be single cast. Those participants cast in roles will participate in a concert performance of each chamber opera.
Category B: Art Song Intensive
Once selected, vocal artists will be paired with a composer and pianist before the festival and over the course of the festival on developing the work for premiere performance.
*During the intensive, artists from both the Opera and Art Song Intensives will have access to lessons, masterclasses, and vocal coachings during their time at Gonzaga University.

Submissions are due by February 15, 2022. Results will be announced by March 1, 2022.

Applicants must upload two individual video clips via YouTube to their application. An audio file (optional)

The two videos must be uploaded separately, and the two in total must not be longer than 10 minutes. Do NOT send videos of entire operas or concerts. Videos should be recent and no older than 18 months. Each video clip must be unedited and without recording enhancements. Each selection should be recorded in one "take."

Applicants will also be asked to upload a current high-resolution headshot (300 X 500 pixels or greater) along with a performance resume.
